Area Memorials

 

Milam County and Cameron have a rich history of veterans and commemorating actions of those veterans. Amongst some of the leading memorials are:

Color photograph of Veterans Memorial In memory of those Milam County veterans who gave their lives in defense of their country. Includes names of 56 World War I, 149 World War II, 9 Korean War, and 13 Vietnam veteran names. In Cameron at First Street & Fannin Avenue.

In memory of the 670 men from Milam County who served in the Confederate Army during the war between the states and those who supported them on their home front during the years 1860-1865. Against the most tremendous odds that Americans have ever faced in battle, these men stood steadfast with their comrades in the Confederate Army for four years. Those that survived the war returned home to Milam County to help to work make Texas the great state it is today. Erected in 1986, in Cameron at Fannin Avenue & Main Street.

 

Color photograph of Sul Ross home place Boyhood home of L. S. "Sul" Ross (1838-1898), Texas Governor from 1887 to 1891. His father Shapley P. Ross, Indian agent and Ranger, built house after moving here about 1841; he chose this site because it had a good spring. L. S. Ross, who was a Confederate general, served as president of Texas A. & M. College after holding office as governor. In 1890 this pavilion was erected to accommodate band concerts, meetings and rallies. It was the scene in 1892 of a landmark debate between two gubernatorial candidates: Gov. James S. Hogg and George Clark. Erected in 1969, in Cameron at 4th Street & Lamar.

 

Color photograph of 36th Memorial Highway The 36th Division Memorial Highway. Texas Highway 36 runs through Milam County for 33.9 miles, and was dedicated as such by the Texas Legislature in 1985. ► From Buckholts, through Cameron, Milano, and then south towards Caldwell.

Benjamin Rush Milam, born in Kentucky 1788, solider in the War of 1812, trader with the Texas Comanche Indians 1818, Colonel in the Long Expedition 1820, Emprasario from 1826 to 1836. Benjamin Rush Milam participated in the capture of Goliad, October 9, 1835, was killed in San Antonio December 7, 1835, while commanding the Texas forced which later captured the town. Who will follow Old Ben Milam into San Antonio? Erected 1936, in Cameron at Central Avenue @ Main Street.
